The Problem
AI-generated art has emerged as a new avenue for creative or artistic expression. However, the effectiveness of AI-generated art compared to traditional human-created art remains unexplored. The objective of this project was to investigate the user experience of creative tools that create AI-generated art, specifically Microsoft Designer, Runway ML and ChatGPT and examine whether these tools generate content that effectively meets the needs of the user.

The Solution
Users believe that AI-generated art produced by Microsoft Designer, ChatGPT and Runway ML has the capacity to be visually appealing unique and original. Most users want to leverage these tools for idea generation, content creation, efficiency and productivity, creative inspiration, collaboration and community engagement. When interacting with these tools, the user experience would be more enhanced if it offered a more intuitive, easy to use interface, a robust amount of customization options and user control and algorithmic transparency.

Usability Testing
I conducted usability testing with a total of 3 participants: two female, one male that were between the ages of 19-30, based in the US and worked in the creative industry.
Instructions:
Each participant was asked to create a single prompt that would generate AI art and enter that same prompt into ChatGPT, Microsoft Designer and Runway ML.
Microsoft Designer
Runway ML
ChatGPT
Usability Testing: Feedback
Users agreed that all 3 creative tools have a user friendly interface. Microsoft Designer ranked the highest as the most user-friendly interface, since it offers a wide range of intuitive tools to use. Users felt constrained by the limited customization options provided by ChatGPT and Runway ML.
User control and algorithmic control are important to users: Runway ML enables users to fine-tune algorithms and also provides users with more transparency on the parameters of the models being used, which all 3 users expressed a preference for.
Users want to collaborate with others artists and researchers: this empowers them to engage in collective design and idea generation.
